Collaborating to Make Florida a Leader in Pediatric Cancer Care

Florida’s Specialty Hospitals for Children are united in a mission to elevate Florida’s standing as a leader in pediatric cancer care, ensuring that families can access world-class treatment without ever leaving the state.

As the third-largest state by pediatric population, Florida accounts for 6% of all new pediatric cancer cases in the U.S. Yet, despite these numbers, the state is home to only one top 50 ranked pediatric cancer program and none in the top 25. Currently, an estimated 10% of children with cancer – and approximately 50% of relapsed cases – are forced to seek care outside of Florida.

Our specialty children’s hospitals are uniquely positioned to change this narrative and are committed to transforming pediatric cancer care in Florida. Together, these hospitals serve the majority of children in Florida with complex cancer conditions or rare tumors, and they are dedicated to elevating our state to the forefront of pediatric research, innovation, and treatment.

To achieve this, Florida’s Specialty Hospitals for Children are investing in four key areas:

Research

Driving breakthroughs that will define the future of pediatric cancer care.

Recruitment

Attracting top talent to build the strongest possible teams.

Program Development

Expanding and enhancing clinical programs to meet the needs of our pediatric population.

Infrastructure and Technology

Building state-of-the-art facilities and adopting cutting-edge technologies to support world-class care.

Our Commitment in Action

Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital:

As Florida’s only top 50 ranked pediatric cancer program (ranked 31st by U.S. News & World Report), Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital is home to three active fellowship programs and is a leading center for Children’s Oncology Group studies.

Nemours Children’s Health and Wolfson Children’s Hospital:

Together, these hospitals have opened THE PLAYERS Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders, a state-of-the-art facility that houses one of the largest pediatric sickle cell programs in the state and plays a central role in the Nemours Children’s Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders, the most extensive pediatric cancer program in Florida.

Nicklaus Children’s Hospital:

With a recent $15 million gift from Helen and Jacob Shaham, the hospital’s cancer and blood disorder institute has been further elevated, now known as the Helen & Jacob Shaham Cancer & Blood Disorders Institute. The hospital also collaborates with Florida International University on a groundbreaking clinical trial for personalized treatments for some of the deadliest children’s cancers.
